Enjoying the Journey

Sometimes when people buy a new car, they think more about gas mileage and resale value than they do about their own experience. Unfortunately, if you overlook your own personal enjoyment, you might end up driving a car that you hate for a lot longer than you want to. I have bought and sold several cars over my lifetime, and I can tell you that I have the most fun with a car when I really stop to think about what I am looking for. My website is designed to help you to decide what type of car will work for you—so that you can enjoy the journey.

4 Things You Need To Understand Before Becoming An Owner-Operator Truck Driver

If you want to make the switch from driving for other people to driving for yourself, then you want to become an owner-operator. Before you become an owner-operator, you need to make sure you understand how this will be different than just being a driver.

You Need to Have Money to Invest

If you want to become an owner of your own trucking operation, you need to have some money to invest. In order to start your own truck driving company, you need to be able to purchase your own truck. You need to pay for insurance for your vehicle, as well as workers' compensation insurance for any workers you have and health insurance for yourself. You will have to pay for other business overhead and costs. Becoming an owner requires you to have money to invest or a decent credit score so you can obtain a business loan to help you build your business.

You Need to Hire Others

Next, you are going to have to hire other people to help you. If you don't have a lot of experience with accounting, you will need to hire an accountant to help you out with your billing, payroll, and taxes. Your accountant doesn't need to be a full-time employee; they can be an independent contractor as well.

You may need to hire someone to answer your phone, or hire an answering service to do so. As you build up contacts, you may also want to hire additional truck drivers as well.

You Need to Be Ready to Network

Next, you need to be good at networking if you want to run your own trucking business. You are going to need to make contacts with businesses that need items shipped. You are going to need to build contacts with agencies that hire trucking companies. You need to be good at networking in order to ensure that you always have enough jobs to do.

You Need to Enjoy the Business Side of Trucking

Finally, you need to enjoy the truck driving side of the business as well. When you first start out as an owner-operator and work on building your business and bringing in other drivers, you are going to have to be out on the road, running routes, and dropping off products. You need to be willing to put in the hours to complete all orders.

If you want to become an owner-operator, you need to have money to invest in purchasing your own vehicle, hiring staff, and taking care of tasks. You need to enjoy the business side of trucking, be ready to network, and find jobs that you can do. Driving is now just a part of your daily obligations.
